
Aggies Take Home Opener with 3-0 Sweep of UT-San Antonio

Senior outside hitter Brandi Mount posted a team-high 19 kills as the 18th-ranked Texas A&M volleyball team won its home opener Tuesday with a 30-10, 30-20, 30-27 win over Texas-San Antonio before 1,075 fans at G. Rollie White Coliseum.
Mount had a big night on the attack, narrowly missing her career best with a .600 hitting percentage and just one error in 30 attempts. She complimented her 19-kill performance with eight digs and two blocks.
After the Roadrunners (0-4) scored the first point of game one, A&M (5-0) went on a 25-4 run to take control of the game, eventually cruising to a 30-10 win. Michelle Cole had six kills, five digs and two blocks in the game as the Aggies outhit UTSA .368 to .028.
A&M built a 10-point lead in the second game at 16-6 before the two teams began trading points. Trailing 22-12, the Roadrunners began chipping away at the deficit and closed to within five at 25-20 on a Rebecca Wynalda attack error. After a Kendra Felder kill gave the Aggies a point and possession of the ball, Julia Rex served the Aggies to a 30-20 win.
UTSA grabbed an early 6-3 lead in the third game on a pair of kills by Shelly Wilson and one by Charlsie Heifrin. With Beth Weynand behind the service line, the Aggies tied the score at 7-7 and claimed a two-point lead on kills by Cole and A.D. Achilefu. After A&M eased out to a 22-16 advantage behind the attack of Mount, a pair of service aces by Wilson and two Aggie attack errors cut the lead to two. The Roadrunners would again pull within two at 29-27 on a block by Heifrin and Stacy Schmidt before Mount closed out the match with another kill.
For the match, A&M outhit UTSA .278 to .075 and out-blocked the Roadrunners six to three. Cole had eight kills and 10 digs, while Achilefu also added eight kills. Jenna Moscovic led the team with 12 digs.
The Roadrunners were led offensively by Heifrin's nine kills, while Molly Lowery posted a game-high 16 digs.
Texas A&M returns to action this weekend when they Aggies host the Verizon Texas A&M Invitational at G. Rollie White Coliseum. The Aggies begin the tournament on Friday, meeting Florida State at 6 p.m., followed by No. 25 Texas facing No. 9 Stanford at 8 p.m. Action concludes Saturday with Texas taking on FSU at 5 p.m. and the Aggies battling Stanford and Olympian Logan Tom at 7 p.m.
