The Texas A&M equestrian team claimed second place in the third of three English shows being held over the weekend at N.W. Dick Freeman Arena on Sunday.
Oklahoma State defeated the Aggies 34-28 with Kansas State third at 21 points. Oklahoma State also claimed the yearly regional points race, and a team berth at the zone championships, with a final tally of 245 for the season. The Aggies finished just ahead of the Wildcats 229-228.
Aggie sophomore Meredith Houx claimed the regional high point title with a victory in open flat and a runner-up finish in open fences. By being the region’s top open rider, Houx earns an automatic berth to the IHSA National Championship Show on May 3-5 in Cazenovia, N.Y. Houx finished the year with a total of 76 points in open fences and open flat. OSU’s Corrie Janssen and West Texas A&M’s Rachel Quest ended in a tie for second with 60 points. Houx also earned reserve high point rider honors for the day after accumulating a total of 12 points.
In the final ride of her career, senior Keyea Webster earned a victory in the second section of open flat. Webster was an individual national qualifier in intermediate flat one year ago.
Junior Bonner Wimberly, the 2001 novice fences team national champion, captured a win in her first-ever ride at the intermediate level. Wimberly will be a threat to go deep into the postseason after qualifying for regionals in novice fences at the individual level in the first show of the year.
Sophomore Mandy Richter earned a second spot to regionals in as many days with a win in the second section of intermediate flat. Richter will be one of six A&M riders with two opportunities to ride at the regional championships at West Texas A&M on March 9.
Other Aggies claiming a spot to regionals in the final regular season show of the year were Germaine Dougherty in open fences and Catherine Crisp in intermediate flat. Dougherty, who has been the regional high point rider the past two seasons, earned a third straight trip to regionals in open fences. Crisp is one of the maroon-and-white sextet with two chances to advance to the zone championships while at regionals.
All-in-all, an impressive 14 A&M English riders have qualified for the regional championships, with six of those getting two rides apiece in an effort to qualify for the zone championships to be held April 6 in Stillwater, Okla. Comparatively speaking, 17 riders representing the other nine teams in the region combined will battle A&M’s best for the right to advance to the next round of postseason competition.
The A&M western team will finish its regular season with a nationals berth on the line this Saturday and Sunday at West Texas A&M in Canyon. Oklahoma State currently holds a five-point lead over A&M with just two regular season shows remaining.
