The Texas A&M men’s golf team carded a final round 296 on a cold Tuesday afternoon and finished seventh at the first annual Coastal Carolina University Invitational at the Grande Dunes Resort.
With temperatures in the mid 40's and the wind chill factor below freezing, the Aggies were just one shot out of the lead after Monday’s opening round score of 290. The temperatures went up on Tuesday, but A&M’s scores rose as well, as the Aggies ballooned to a 306 in the morning round then bounced back with a 296 in the final round in the afternoon.
A&M sophomore Stephen Reed, who shared the first round lead after a four-under-par 68 on Monday, carded rounds of 76-75 on Tuesday for a 219 total and finished tied for 11th place in the individual standings. Also for A&M, junior Dwayne Morley tied for 31st at 72-78-75=225, freshman Tyler Garrett (75-76-75=226) and senior Sean Gilliland (78-76-72=226) tied for 40th and sophomore Parker Briley tied for 52nd (75-80-74=229).
Washington State won the team title with a 54-hole total of 861, finishing 18 strokes ahead of second place Southern Methodist (879). Virginia Tech finished third at 882 and host Coastal Carolina placed fourth in the 17-team field. A&M’s 892 total placed it seventh, just 13 strokes our of second place.
Washington State's Dustin White played three rounds of sub-par golf to post a 204 (68-69-67) to capture medalist honors. Virginia Tech's Brendon De Jonge was second at 211 (303-292-287) and Coastal's Rafael Vera rounded out the top three at 213 (72-68-73).
