The Texas A&M men’s golf team fired a final-round 292 on Saturday and finished 14th at the 51st Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club.
Baylor won the team title with rounds of 280-284-281=845, finishing 13 strokes ahead of runner-up San Diego State (858). New Mexico took third place at 865, followed by Pepperdine (868), Texas-Arlington (869), Louisiana-Lafayette (870), Lamar (874), Central Oklahoma (875), Texas Tech (876), Arkansas (879), Texas-San Antonio (879), Colorado State (881), Central Florida (884), A&M (300-293-292=885), Sam Houston State (887), Rice (898) and Texas-Pan American (922).
Baylor’s Jamie McLeary won the individual crown in a playoff against Texas-San Antonio’s Gibby Martens after each finished with nine-under-par totals on the par-72, 7,125-yard layout. McLeary fired rounds of 65-71-71=207 while Martens posted scores of 69-69-69=207.
Freshman Rand Arbuckle led the Aggies with a career-best tie for 12th place after rounds of 77-68-71=216. Also for A&M, sophomore Stephen Reed tied for 50th at 75-74-75=224, sophomore Parker Briley tied for 50th at 78-73-73=224, senior Sean Gilliland tied for 63rd at 71-79-76=226 and freshman Tyler Garrett tied for 72nd at 77-78-73=228.
Competing as individuals for the Aggies, junior Dwayne Morley tied for 21st at 76-70-72=218, sophomore Mark Schultz tied for 75th at 76-76-77=229 and senior Shaun Helmle tied for 81st at 79-77-75=231.
The Aggies return to action at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate April 12-14 in Columbus, Ohio.
