The Texas A&M football team ended spring drills with a scrimmage at Kyle Field. The majority of play pitted the first-team offensive and defensive lines, and the second-team lines matching up.

"Overall, I was pleased with the spring," Aggie Head Coach R.C. Slocum said. "The players gave great effort. I can not think of one day where we had to get on them to give effort. That's a credit to some of our seniors and leaders on this team."

"I thought our running backs ran tough and did a good job," Slocum added. "The young receivers made catches and have matured and we got better play out of the quarterback position. Defensively, the Wrecking Crew picked up right where they left off. I think we have some difference makers and to be a good football team you have to have some exceptional players."

Slocum singled out the play of defensive backs Sammy Davis and Terrence Kiel, as well as defensive lineman Ty Warren. Outside linebacker Jarrod Penright was limited due to injuries, but has shown leadership qualities as well.

In the scrimmage, Dustin Long was 13-of-24 for 115 yards with two interceptions and one touchdown, an 18-yard pass to Bryant Singleton. Jason Carter was 8-of-14 for 182 yards and one touchdown, a 61-yard strike to John Roberson. Roberson caught five balls for 90 yards. Singleton caught four balls for 67 yards.

In the running game, junior walkon Will Mays rushed 11 times for 103 yards including a 65-yard touchdown run up the middle against the second unit. Joe Weber rushed 18 times for 47 yards while Keith Joseph had 21 yards on eight carries. Jason Carter ran the ball six times for 42 yards.

Aggie defensive back Byron Jones picked off one pass and linebacker Everett Smith made a nice pick dropping into coverage. Ty Warren recorded two tackles for losses and defensive Jaxson Appel sacked Long for a loss of 10 yards.

Aggie senior quarterback Mark Farris was not in attendance at today's scrimmage as he and his wife, Neocia, and big sister Kameryn, welcomed the newest addition to the Farris household as daughter Kendyll was born this afternoon. She weighed in at six pounds and was 18 inches long. Everyone is doing fine.

The Aggies open the 2002 season at Kyle Field on Aug. 31 against Louisiana-Lafayette with kickoff tentatively set for 6 p.m.
