David Tasker of New Mexico Military Institute has signed a national letter-of-intent to play college golf at Texas A&M, Aggies coach J.T. Higgins said Friday.
Tasker, a native of New South Wales, Australia, was a first-team All-America by the National Junior College Athletic Association last season after finishing third at the 2001 NJCAA National Championships. He has won three tournaments this season and with a 71.3 stroke average is among the top individual contenders at the 2002 NJCAA National Championships May 21-24 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
"David's impact at Texas A&M will be felt immediately," said Higgins, who is completing his first season. "He is capable of being our No. 1 player next year and I think he could make the starting lineup for just about any team in the country. He'll help make us competitive in the Big 12 Conference next season and should take some of the pressure off our incoming freshmen. Davis also is an outstanding student and is a leader with an unparalleled work ethic and dedication to being the best."
Tasker joins five players who signed with A&M in November to form Higgins' first recruiting class, which is ranked among the best in the country -- Tyler Kief (Kingwood, Texas), Kyle Nathan (Winnetka, Ill.), Andrew Parr (London, Ontario), Mike Rim (Lakewood, Calif.) and Pansing Singhaseni (Beverly Hills, Calif.). Parr, Rim and Singhaseni are American Junior Golf Association All-Americans, Kief is regarded as one of the top juniors in the Houston area and Nathan is the 2000 Illinois state junior champion.
