The Texas A&M Radio Network announced today that former Texas A&M All-American defensive back Kevin Smith will join the broadcast team for the 2002 season as the color analyst, replacing another former Texas A&M All-American defensive back Dave Elmendorf.

"We're pleased to announce that Kevin Smith will join our broadcast team for the 2002 football season," Texas A&M athletics director Wally Groff said. "Kevin will bring a great deal of insight to our broadcasts and I believe he will work well with Dave South."

"The athletic department and the Texas A&M Radio Network would like to thank Dave Elmendorf for his contributions to the broadcasts for the last 13 years and we wish him well in his future endeavors," Groff said. "It's a stroke of good fortune for Texas A&M fans to have had someone like Dave Elmendorf on our broadcast team, and then to be able to call on Kevin Smith to come on board."

Smith was a four-year letterman at Texas A&M (1988-91) helping the Aggies reach a bowl game in his final three years. In his first career start against Houston (1988), Smith made a touchdown-saving tackle on the first play from scrimmage and ended the day with one interception, three passes broken up and five tackles. His senior season, the Aggies won the 1991 Southwest Conference championship and played Florida State in the Cotton Bowl. That same year, Smith was named a consensus All-America defensive back and was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award presented to the nation's most outstanding defensive back. Smith was also a semifinalist for the National Defensive Player of the Year as selected by The Football News. Teams did not throw toward Smith's side much as a senior. He broke up nine passes and had two interceptions. He also led the SWC and ranked No. 6 nationally in punt returns with an average of 14.5 yards per return which included two returns for touchdowns. Smith ranks No. 1 on the Texas A&M all-time interception list with 20 career pickoffs and he returned three for touchdowns. He picked off nine passes in the 1989 season, Coach R.C. Slocum's first campaign as the head coach of the Aggies. Smith was inducted into the Texas A&M Hall of Fame in 1997.

Smith was a first-round draft choice of the Dallas Cowboys in 1992 and went on to star for the Cowboys. He helped bring back the 1993, 1994 and 1996 Super Bowl Championship trophy to Dallas. He led Dallas in interceptions in 1993 and again in 1996. Smith retired from the Cowboys after the 1999 season and continues to make Dallas his home.

Smith will make his broadcast debut when the Aggies open the 2002 season against Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Kyle Field. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.
