Six months after signing to play football at Texas A&M, 20 scholarship players and nine invited walkons stepped on to the grass practice fields for the first time Tuesday and went through two workouts.
The non-contact morning and afternoon workouts lasted just over a combined two hours and head coach R.C. Slocum said he was pleasantly surprised with the players' abilities.
"Overall, I'm pleased," Slocum said. "I'm pleasantly surprised. They looked good or better than I thought they were. They were eager and we didn't have to do much to push them to give good effort."
There were no new injuries to report.
The freshmen will use Wednesday for new student orientation before returning for two workouts on Thursday at 8:40 a.m. and at 4:30 p.m. at the grass practice facility. All practices are open to the public. Fans should check for the specific practice schedule daily on AggieAthletics.com.
The first full team workout will be Saturday at 7:50 a.m.
The Aggies kickoff the 2002 season on Saturday, August 31 against Louisiana-Lafayette at 6 p.m. at Kyle Field.
