RED RAIDERS-AGGIES SERIES HISTORY --- Texas A&M leads the all-time series with Texas Tech, 33-26-1 ... During the R.C. Slocum era, the Aggies are 5-1 vs. the Red Raiders at Kyle Field ... Overall, Slocum's Aggies are 7-6 against Texas Tech ... The contest is the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams ... The last time Texas Tech came to Kyle Field, the Wrecking Crew sacked QB Kliff Kingsbury four times and posted a pair of interceptions in a 33-15 Aggie victory. The 18-point margin of victory was the largest in the series since the Aggies routed the Raiders 31-6 in Lubbock in 1993.
OFFENSIVE RESURGENCE--- After struggling offensively for the first three games of the 2002 season, the Aggie offense was sharp in A&M's 31-3 win over Louisiana Tech. The performance offered numerous encouraging aspects:
- The Aggies scored 30 or more offensive points for the first time in 13 regular season games or since A&M offense scored 32 points in a 38-24 win over McNeese State in the 2001 season opener.
- A&M gained 200-plus yards both rushing (206) and passing (238) in a game for the first time in six games dating back to the 2001 Iowa State game.
- The Aggies rolled up 444 yards of total offense, a season-high and the most since the second game of the 2001 season when A&M gained 507 yards against Wyoming.
- Derek Farmer had 119 rushing yards and Jamaar Taylor had 118 receiving yards, marking the first time since the 1996 North Texas game that A&M has had a 100-yard rusher and receiver (Sirr Parker, 116/Albert Connell 166) in the same game.
- The Dustin Long-to-Jamaar Taylor passing touchdown was A&M's first in the regular season in seven games dating back to the 2001 Kansas State game.
- The 206 rushing yards were a season-high and the most since the 2001 Iowa State game.
- Farmer's 35-yard run was the longest of the season by an Aggie since Farmer's 65-yarder against ISU last year.
WRECKING CREW DEFENSE--- The Texas A&M defense set a goal of leading the nation in defense prior to the 2002 and the early season performances by the Wrecking Crew look promising.
- In the national defensive rankings, the Wrecking Crew sits at No. 3 in total defense (234.0 Yds/G), No. 3 in scoring defense (8.8 Pts./G) No. 4 in rushing defense (68.8 Yds/G) and No. 13 in pass efficiency defense (90.1 rating).
- The Aggies haven't allowed any first-quarter points all season and have allowed just nine points in the first three quarters this season.
- The Aggies are allowing opponents just 2.1 yards per rushing attempt and 3.6 yards per play.
- The Wrecking Crew has 18 sacks after four games, an average of 4.5 QBS per game. Eleven different defenders have made at least .5 sack.
- The Aggies have made eight interceptions by six different defenders.
- Virginia Tech's much-vaunted running back tandem of Lee Suggs and Kevin Jones ("The Untouchables") could manage only 99 yards on 28 carries (3.5 Yds/Carry).
- Louisiana Tech's prolific signalcaller Luke McCown was limited to a season-low 172 passing yards on 23-of-42 passing. Tech's offense was limited to a season-low 251 yards of total offense.
- The Crew has posted 14 take-aways in the first four games (3.5 per game).
- The Aggie defense has faced 131 rushing attempts this season but allowed just two runs of more than 20 yards
- The Wrecking Crew hasn't allowed a 25-yard plus run by a running back since a 26-yarder by Oklahoma State's Reggie White in 2000.
- Senior outside linebacker Jarrod Penright has forced a fumble in all four games this season and posted at least one quarterback sack in three of four contests.
SEASON TRENDS/NOTES---
- Aggie defensive end Ty Warren was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after posting 12 tackles, including four behind the line, and five third-down stops against Virginia Tech.
- Mark Farris began the season as starter at quarterback but has been supplanted in the lineup by sophomore Dustin Long. Farris had started 26 straight games and compiled a 17-9 record as a starter.
- Head Coach R.C. Slocum announced on Sept. 24 that assistant head coach Kevin Sumlin would be responsible for the offensive play-calling and the overall direction of the Aggie offense.
- After a season and three games of playing fullback exclusively, senior Joe Weber saw action at tailback against Louisiana Tech and responded with 47 yards on 13 carries.
- With last Saturday's win over Louisiana Tech, the Aggies improved their record against teams from the state of Louisiana to 15-2 in the R.C. Slocum era (since 1989).
- After completing just four passes to the tight end in 2001, the Aggies completed four passes to TE Greg Porter last week against Louisiana Tech.

LOUISIANA TECH REHASH ---
- Louisiana Tech entered the A&M game averaging 436.8 total offensive yards and 30.5 points per game. But A&M's Wrecking Crew defense continued its outstanding play of 2002, limiting the Bulldogs to season lows of 251 yards and just three points. Tech's previous low this season was 433 yards against Clemson. For the season, the Aggies are allowing just 8.8 points per game.
- The119-yard rushing effort by sophomore Derek Farmer was the third 100-yard rushing game of his career. It marked the first 100-yard game by an Aggie since Farmer gained 133 on 17 carries against Iowa State in 2001.
- Outside linebacker Jarrod Penright's forced fumble in the first quarter was his fourth of the season. Penright has forced a fumble in every game this season and has seven forced fumbles for his career. The school record for season forced fumbles is six (Jacob Green, 1979; Aaron Wallace, 1987; and Dat Nguyen, 1996), while the career mark is 10 by Marcus Buckley (1990-92). Penright finished the game with a team-high eight tackles, including two quarterback sacks for -19 yards.
- Junior wide receiver Jamaar Taylor caught five passes for 118 yards, the second most yards of his career, and added one touchdown. It marked Taylor's second career 100-yard receiving game after he had 146 yards on nine catches last year against Colorado. The last time an A&M receiver had a 100-yard game was last year against Kansas State, when Terrence Murphy had 107 yards on five catches.
- The Aggies' nine-play, 86-yard touchdown drive that drained 4:20 from the clock in the second quarter was a season-high for plays, yards and time. The last time A&M had a longer drive in terms of yardage was in the second quarter of the 2000 Kansas State game when the Aggies reached paydirt on a 97-yard drive.
- The Aggies' first-quarter touchdown was their first offensive TD in the opening quarter since the 2001 Iowa State game, a span of six games (not including the bowl game). A&M's 10 offensive points in the first quarter are the most by the Aggies in any FIRST HALF since the Kansas State game (not including the bowl game). The Aggies' 17 first-half points are the most in any opening half since they scored 17 points in the first half against Notre Dame a year ago.
- Senior Joe Weber saw his first action at tailback since the 2000 season and responded with 47 yards on 13 carries. He had exclusively played fullback all this season and last season.
- junior cornerback Sean Weston's 44-yard interception return in the fourth quarter was the longest by an Aggie since Michael Jameson returned a pickoff 76 yards in 2000
- senior running back Dwain Goynes 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter was his second of the season. Prior to this season, he had three receiving touchdowns.
- junior placekicker John Pierson (Missouri City) made his college kicking debut tonight, making a fourth-quarter PAT

- the attendance for the Louisiana Tech game was 72,802, A&M's 13th straight 70,000-plus crowd at Kyle Field. Prior to the streak, A&M only had 13 total 70,000-plus crowds in its history.

SENIOR CITIZENS --- The 15-member senior class of 2002 might be the most accomplished senior class at Texas A&M since 1998 when Dat Nguyen and crew won the Big 12 crown.
Here are some facts:
- 2002 seniors have started a combined 256 games during their careers (an average of 17.1 starts per senior).
- Thirteen of 15 have started at least four games on offense or defense. Another player, Chance Pearce, has been the Aggies' starting deep snapper for 40 straight games.
- Eleven seniors have 10 or more career starts to their credit, led by three-year starter Brian Gamble's 39 starts.
- The class features nine fifth-year seniors.
- The seniors have compiled a 26-14 overall record, including a 17-4 mark at Kyle Field.
- The seniors have gone bowling three straight seasons. If the Aggies qualify in 2002, the '02 seniors will be the sixth senior class to go bowling all four years of their careers ('78, '92, '93, '00, '01).
EXPERIENCED AGGIES --- A whopping 31 players on the 2002 roster have started at least one game during their A&M careers.

SAMMY DAVIS AND THE RAT PACK --- Headlined by two-time All-Big 12 cornerback Sammy Davis Jr., and fellow three-year starters Terrence Kiel and Sean Weston, the Aggies' defensive secondary might rank as one of the best groups of the R.C. Slocum era.
Here's a closer look at the A&M DBs:
- Sammy Davis, CB --- Big 12's leading active pass thief with 10 career pickoffs ... rated one of the front-runners for the Thorpe Award, which is given annually to the nation's top DB ... has started 30 games, including 28 straight.
- Terrence Kiel, SS --- Led the team with 92 tackles in 2001 ... rated the nation's No. 3 "assassin" or strong safety by ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit ... has 204 career tackles and six career pickoffs ... has 27 caeer starts.
- Sean Weston, CB --- Has broken up 25 opponent passes over his career ... has 24 career starts.
- Jaxson Appel, FS --- Won the free safety job during fall camp ... impressed the A&M coaching staff with his aggressive hitting and savvy ... second on the team in tackles with 27.
- Byron Jones, CB --- Sophomore has started the past two games at cornerback. Was named Game MVP of the Galleryfurniture.com Bowl after grabbing three interceptions.
SHUTTING DOWN THE BIG 12'S BEST --- The Wrecking Crew faced 10 of the Big 12's top 15 rushers last season. Here's how the group fared against the Aggie defense:

CHANGES IN 2002--- Shifting positions since the 2001 season were: senior Dwain Goynes from wide receiver to running back; and redshirt freshman Bryant Singleton from wide receiver to defensive back.
Players who saw action in 2001 with new jersey number are: junior Jamaar Taylor from #82 to #2 and junior Tim Van Zant from #49 to #83.
The Aggies had a late addition to the team when freshman WR Anthony Wright joined the team in August.
Retiring from the team were sophomore TE Joey Perot, junior DB Richard Whitaker and junior DB Dawon Gentry.
BACK IN ACTION --- After sitting out the final 10 games of the 2001 season, there was probably no player on the Aggie roster more anxious to hit the field this season than wide receiver Bethel Johnson.
The senior from Corsicana, Texas was supposed to the Aggies' bellcow at wide receiver in 2001, but instead Johnson fell victim to a ruptured spleen in the second game of the season.
Johnson is the first Aggie to enter his senior season with more than 75 catches and 1,000 receiving yards to his credit.

TOP NOTCH COACHING --- Members of R.C. Slocum's coaching staffs have a history of being hot coaching commodities, as evidenced by four of Slocum's former coordinators serving as head coaches at the NFL or college level.
Fifteen of Slocum's former staffers hold positions in the NFL, ranging from general manager to position coach to player personnel to scout.
Last year's A&M coaching staff, which featured four new assistants, returns intact in 2002, which hasn't happened since the 1996 season.
