Sophomore setter Lexy Beers talked with AggieAthletics.com about the setter position, attending Texas A&M, and her dream vacation spot.

How much responsibility lies in the setter position? Do you think the average fan really knows how much goes into that on the court?

"I think that everyone on the team definitely does. There is a lot of responsibility as far as knowing who's hitting well, and where the blockers are, and trying to get people one-on-one. I think that all the people on the court have a lot of responsibility though."

People have referred to the setter as the "quarterback" of the team. Do you see that as the case?

"I do, because you're the one that's calling the plays and, like a quarterback on the football team, passing the ball. It's a lot similar to that."

Lexy Beers
Lexy Beers is in her first season as starting setter for Laurie Corbelli's nationally-ranked Aggie volleyball team.

You're not the attacking type of setter, and it may be hard for someone to see if you're having a good game because they don't notice it. Does that at all bother you that people may only be able to see the bad things that happen?

"No, it doesn't bother me at all. I get the most satisfaction from the team doing well. I don't really care what other people say or what other people think, just as long as we know what's going on on the court and just as long as we're doing well. That's all that matters."

The team has always seemed to have fun on the court, always smiling and joking. How important is that to you and everyone on the team, to make sure you have fun out there?

"It's really important, because that's why we all play. We all play because we love to play and we have fun when we're playing. If it wasn't fun, we probably wouldn't be doing it. It's really important for us to keep that in mind when we're playing in games, just to have fun, because that's what it's all about."

Does it help you relax too?

"Yeah, it helps a lot. It kind of takes the stress off. When everyone's having fun together, it just makes it a lot better."

Your only official recruiting visit was to Texas A&M. what made you pick A&M?

"I had heard a lot about Laurie [Corbelli] and John [Corbelli] through other players and other coaches. They had a really good reputation for being good coaches and good people, good family people. So, when they sent me letters, I responded. I came out here with my dad one weekend in March before my senior year, and I loved the campus. I heard a lot about Texas A&M, the school spirit and all that kind of stuff, so I pretty much knew before my official visit that's where I was going. I committed verbally before I even got here cause I knew this was where I wanted to go."

A lot of people that are from pretty far away and come to school here say it's almost like you're not away from home because of the family-like atmosphere. Do you find that to be the case?

"Yeah. And the people are so nice. It's so different from California, and I don't mean that in a bad way. Laurie and John are almost like my parents, you know? It really helped to come from far away to a place like that. A lot of my friends that went away got homesick, because they don't feel at home where they are, but the people here and the atmosphere made it really easy to be away from home."

Is there one part of your game that you'd like to improve on and get better?

"Definitely my blocking. I'm not very big, so that's my one part of my game that I'm really trying to work on."

You got any ups?

"No, not really (laughs). Not right now...we're working on that."

Is that a strength thing, lower body strength?

"Yeah. Just my legs, and leg strength, I think. I've never really been a jumper, so I never really did track or anything like that."

Do you get a lot more excited out there when you do post a huge block?

"Yeah. My team gets excited just because they know it doesn't happen very often (laughs)."

What do you like to do when you get free time?

"I like to read. I'm an English major."

What do you want to do when you get out of here?

"I want to be either a second grade teacher or a nurse. Probably a teacher, but I'm kind of liking the nurse thing, because I don't mind all the blood and guts and needles and stuff."

What's your dream vacation spot?

"I'd have to say Tahiti. I went there two years ago and I loved it. It was the best place. That'd probably be the place I'd go."

Did you get any cool presents for your birthday this past week?

"My sister came! My parents flew her out and I didn't know she was coming. That was a big surprise. Carol [Price] dropped her off at my house Thursday night."

So Carol was in on it, huh?

"Everyone on the team knew [she was coming]. Except me! It was fun. We had a good weekend."
