No. 25 Texas A&M improved to 11-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12 Conference with a 30-18, 30-21, 30-24 victory over Oklahoma at the OU Field House. The Sooners fall to 4-9, 2-3.
A&M outhit the Sooners, .383 to .157 for the match and posted 10 blocks to OU's three. Melissa Munsch hit .429 and led the Aggies with 17 kills. Carol Price led the team in blocks with five, and setter Lexy Beers posted 38 assists in the victory.
The score was tied at 2 in the opening game when the Aggies took a commanding lead by outscoring the Sooners, 15-4. Oklahoma cut the lead to seven at 25-18 but could get no closer as A&M closed out the game with five consecutive points. Munsch had three of her game-high six kills in the run.
A&M never trailed in the second game, although Oklahoma fought back from a three-point deficit to tie the score at 8. A&M then rallied for four consecutive points to take the lead for good. The Sooners could get no closer than two points. A&M held a 24-18 lead when the Aggies once again ran off four straight points to take their biggest lead of the game. A&M then was up, 29-21, when a Sooner serve went long to give the Aggies the game and a 2-0 match advantage.
There were 13 ties in the final game, the last one coming at 18. Munsch then put down a kill, teamed with Pulaski for a block and put down an OU overpass to give the Aggies a lead they would not relinquish. A&M held its biggest lead at 28-22, but back-back Aggie errors put the Sooners within 28-24. Munsch then posted consecutive kills to end the match.
OU was led by Christina Barlow, who posted a team-high nine kills.
The Aggies put their 17-match home winning streak on the line Sunday when they play host to No. 5 Nebraska. Match time is at 2 p.m. at G. Rollie White Coliseum. High school students and fans with a ticket stub from the Texas Tech-Texas A&M football game will be admitted for $2 each. In addition, the first 1,000 fans will receive free UCS player cards.
