LONG IGNITES A&M OFFENSE --- In just his third career start at quarterback, sophomore Dustin Long became the most prolific single game touchdown passer in Texas A&M and Big 12 Conference history with seven touchdown aerials last week vs. Texas Tech.

In addition to his seven TD strikes, Long finished the overtime game with 367 yards on 21-of-37 passing with just one interception on a deflected ball.

Long's seven TD passes broke Gary Kubiak's 21-year old school record of six TD passes against Rice in 1981. Long also broke the Big 12 record of six TD passes set by Texas Tech's Kliff Kingsbury earlier this season.

Long's 367 yards rank No. 3 in A&M's record book behind Branndon Stewart's 385-yard effort vs. Colorado in 1996 and Edd Hargett's 376-yard performance vs. SMU in 1968.

SIDE NOTE: Nine of the Aggies' top 10 single game individual passing efforts came in the R.C. Slocum era.

TAYLOR EMERGES --- Junior wide receiver Jamaar Taylor has posted consecutive 100-yard receiving efforts and has three career 100-yard days in his two-year A&M career.

Taylor's three career 100-yard receiving games are tied for third-most in school history behind the four century receiving games posted by Albert Connell (1995-96) and Tony Harrison (1990-93). Taylor is tied at three with Jimmy Teal, Mike Whitwell, Robert Ferguson and Shane Garrett.

Taylor leads the team in catches (25), receiving yards (433) and is tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns (2).

After 13 career games, Farmer's rushing total stands at 906 and could become the 33rd Aggie runner to reach the 1,000-yard mark in career rushing. Farmer would be just the 11th sophomore to reach 1,000.

PORTER BECOMES A TARGET--- Tight end has emerged as a valuable part of the Aggie offense in 2002. Senior Greg Porter, who also lines up at wide receiver occasionally, is second on the team in receptions with 20 for 222 yards with a touchdowns. Over the past three seasons, A&M tight ends combined to catch 24 balls.

SEASON TRENDS/NOTES---

  • Aggie defensive end Ty Warren was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after posting 12 tackles, including four behind the line, and five third-down stops against Virginia Tech.
  • Mark Farris began the season as starter at quarterback but has been supplanted in the lineup by sophomore Dustin Long. Farris had started 26 straight games and compiled a 17-9 record as a starter.
  • Head Coach R.C. Slocum announced on Sept. 24 that assistant head coach Kevin Sumlin would be responsible for the offensive play-calling and the overall direction of the Aggie offense.
  • After a season and three games of playing fullback exclusively, senior Joe Weber has seen spot duty at tailback this season.
  • With a pair of wins over teams from the state of Louisiana in 2002, the Aggies improved their record against teams from the Pelican State to 15-2 in the R.C. Slocum era (since 1989).

TOUGH VS. THE RUN, PART I --- The Wrecking Crew has not allowed a 100-yard rusher in 18 straight regular season games dating back to Oklahoma State RB Reggie White's 112-yard effort in the ninth game of the 2000 season.

TEXAS TECH REHASH ---

  • Dustin Long completed 21 of 37 passes for a career-high 367 yards and 7 touchdowns, setting an A&M and Big 12 Conference record for most TD passes in a game. Tech's Kliff Kingsbury set the previous Big 12 record with six last week against New Mexico, while Gary Kubiak had an A&M school-record six against Rice in 1981. Long's four first-half passing touchdowns tied the school record for a half, matching Kubiak's four first-half tosses against Rice in 1981. Long's passing yardage today is the third most in A&M history behind Branndon Stewart's record of 385 against Colorado in 1996 and Edd Hargett's 376 against SMU in 1968. Long's seven TD passes went to six different recievers.
  • In a statistical quirk regarding A&M's final touchdown in regulation, Stacy Jones was credited with a receiving touchdown and one-yard receiving, but no reception. Greg Porter is credited with an eight-yard reception and Dustin Long is credited with a nine-yard touchdown pass.
  • Jamaar Taylor's 82-yard TD reception from Dustin Long in the third quarter was the ninth longest pass play in school history and was the longest since Mark Farris hit Robert Ferguson with a 93-yard scoring strike against Wyoming in 2000. Taylor finished with 128 yards in six catches, his second straight 100-yard receiving game (he had 5 for 118 last week vs. Louisiana Tech). His career best was 146 yards on 9 catches last year against Colorado.
  • Bethel Johnson's 57-yard touchdown catch from Dustin Long was Johnson's first TD reception since 1999 and was the fourth of his career. Johnson's added his second TD catch of the game (fifth of his career) with a 15-yard grab in the second quarter. The last A&M receiver to have two TD receptions in a game was Jamaar Taylor last year against Colorado (both in the second quarter). The A&M record for single game TD catches is three, shared by three players (more recently Chris Cole against North Texas in 1998).
  • A&M scored on its first offensive play of the game, a 57-yard pass from Dustin Long to Bethel Johnson. The last time A&M scored on its first play was against North Texas in 1998, when Branndon Stewart hurled a 60-yard TD pass to Chris Cole.
  • Greg Porter's 4-yard touchdown reception was the first touchdown catch of his career and the first TD catch by an Aggie tight end since RoDerrick Broughton's 20-yard TD catch against Tulsa in 1999.
  • Derek Farmer rushed for 132 yards on a career-high 27 carries, his second straight 100-yard game and the fourth of his career. It was the second most rushing yards of his career behind his best of 133 yards on 17 carries last year against Iowa State.
  • A&M's 47 points are the most ever by the Aggies in a loss. The previous record was 41 points in a 43-41 loss to Mississippi State in the 2000 Independence Bowl. The last time A&M had more points in a game was in 1999, when they beat Missouri, 51-14 (a span of 17 games).
  • Sammy Davis posted a game-high 15 tackles, including one sack and an additional tackle for loss. He also caused one fumble and recovered another.
  • A&M's 517 total offensive yards were the Aggies' most since they gained 535 yards against Baylor in 1998.

ZONE IMPACT --- Texas A&M has shattered its season home attendance record in each of the last three seasons since the completion of the Bernard C. Richardson Zone complex in 1999. Prior to "The Zone," A&M's home average attendance record was 66,623 in 1987, but since then the record has risen to 73,126 in 1999, 77,579 in 2000 and 82,711 in 2001.

Texas A&M is in the midst of 14-game streak of 70,000-plus crowds at Kyle Field. Prior to the beginning of the streak, A&M has produced a total of 13 70,000-plus crowds in this history.

HOME SWEET KYLE --- In 14 seasons with R.C. Slocum as head coach, the Aggies have compiled a sparkling 71-10-1(.872) record at Kyle Field. The Aggies have posted eight undefeated home records during that time, including seven perfect 6-0 home worksheets. Prior to Slocum's tenure, A&M had posted just eight undefeated season records at Kyle.

SENIOR CITIZENS --- The 15-member senior class of 2002 might be the most accomplished senior class at Texas A&M since 1998 when Dat Nguyen and crew won the Big 12 crown.

Here are some facts:

  • 2002 seniors have started a combined 265 games during their careers (an average of 17.7 starts per senior).
  • Thirteen of 15 have started at least four games on offense or defense. Another player, Chance Pearce, has been the Aggies' starting deep snapper for 40 straight games.
  • Eleven seniors have 10 or more career starts to their credit, led by three-year starter Brian Gamble's 40 starts.
  • The class features nine fifth-year seniors.
  • The seniors have compiled a 26-15 overall record, including a 17-5 mark at Kyle Field.
  • The seniors have gone bowling three straight seasons. If the Aggies qualify in 2002, the '02 seniors will be the sixth senior class to go bowling all four years of their careers ('78, '92, '93, '00, '01).

EXPERIENCED AGGIES --- A whopping 31 players on the 2002 roster have started at least one game during their A&M careers.

SAMMY DAVIS AND THE RAT PACK --- Headlined by two-time All-Big 12 cornerback Sammy Davis Jr., and fellow three-year starters Terrence Kiel and Sean Weston, the Aggies' defensive secondary might rank as one of the best groups of the R.C. Slocum era.

Here's a closer look at the A&M DBs:

  • Sammy Davis, CB --- Big 12's leading active pass thief with 10 career pickoffs ... rated one of the front-runners for the Thorpe Award, which is given annually to the nation's top DB ... has started 31 games, including 29 straight.
  • Terrence Kiel, SS --- Led the team with 92 tackles in 2001 ... rated the nation's No. 3 "assassin" or strong safety by ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit ... has 210 career tackles and six career pickoffs ... has 28 caeer starts.
  • Sean Weston, CB --- Has broken up 26 opponent passes over his career ... has 25 career starts.
  • Jaxson Appel, FS --- Won the free safety job during fall camp ... impressed the A&M coaching staff with his aggressive hitting and savvy ... leads the team with 40 tackles.
  • Byron Jones, CB --- Sophomore has started the past three games at cornerback. Was named Game MVP of the Galleryfurniture.com Bowl after grabbing three interceptions ... tied for team lead with two pickoffs ... leads team with six PBUs.

CHANGES IN 2002--- Shifting positions since the 2001 season were: senior Dwain Goynes from wide receiver to running back; and redshirt freshman Bryant Singleton from wide receiver to defensive back.

Players who saw action in 2001 with new jersey number are: junior Jamaar Taylor from #82 to #2 and junior Tim Van Zant from #49 to #83.

The Aggies had a late addition to the team when freshman WR Anthony Wright joined the team in August.

Retiring from the team were sophomore TE Joey Perot, junior DB Richard Whitaker and junior DB Dawon Gentry.

BACK IN ACTION --- After sitting out the final 10 games of the 2001 season, there was probably no player on the Aggie roster more anxious to hit the field this season than wide receiver Bethel Johnson.

The senior from Corsicana, Texas was supposed to the Aggies' bellcow at wide receiver in 2001, but instead Johnson fell victim to a ruptured spleen in the second game of the season.

Johnson is the first Aggie to enter his senior season with more than 75 catches and 1,000 receiving yards to his credit.

TOP NOTCH COACHING --- Members of R.C. Slocum's coaching staffs have a history of being hot coaching commodities, as evidenced by four of Slocum's former coordinators serving as head coaches at the NFL or college level.

Fifteen of Slocum's former staffers hold positions in the NFL, ranging from general manager to position coach to player personnel to scout.

Last year's A&M coaching staff, which featured four new assistants, returns intact in 2002, which hasn't happened since the 1996 season.

  • Slocum is 75-24-2 (.752) in conference games, 71-10-1 (.872) in games at Kyle Field and 44-24 (.647) in road games.
  • Slocum, a four-time Coach of the Year, has led the Aggies to one Big 12 Conference crown, three SWC Championships, two Big 12 South Division titles and 11 bowl games, including five on Jan. 1st.
  • Ten of Slocum's 13 teams have finished the season ranked in the Top 25.
  • Slocum's teams compiled a 29-game SWC unbeaten streak running from 1991-95.
  • This is the 30th year he has been associated with A&M football, the longest of any football coach in school history. He was an assistant from 1972-80 and once again from 1982-88, interrupted only by a one-year stint as defensive coordinator at USC in 1981.
  • With the Aggies' win over Texas in 1997, Slocum became A&M's winningest head coach by passing Homer Norton, who posted 82 wins from 1934-47 and won the 1939 national championship.
  • He closed out the Southwest Conference ranked as the No. 1 coach in SWC history in overall and SWC winning percentage.
