Junior Stephen Reed carded a two-over-par 72 to lead the Texas A&M men's golf team in Tuesday's first round of the Ninth Annual Adams Cup of Newport at Newport Country Club.
The Aggies posted a team score of 301 in the opening round and are in ninth place, but trail leader Virginia Tech (293) by just eight strokes.
The 17-team field did not complete Tuesday's afternoon round because of darkness. The second round will be completed Wednesday morning, followed by the final round.
Georgia Tech is in second place in the team standings with a 294 total, one stroke behind Virginia Tech. Michigan State and Kentucky (296) are tied for third, followed by Louisville (297), Georgia State (298), Rhode Island (300), East Tennessee State (300), A&M (301), Virginia (303), Mississippi (305), East Carolina (306), South Florida (307), Yale (309), Furman (312), Marshall (315) and Connecticut (318).
Reed is tied for seventh in the individual standings, four strokes behind first-round leader Kasper Jorgenson of Georgia State, who posted a two-under-par 68 on the par-70, 6,735-yard golf course.
Also for A&M, senior Shaun Helmle and freshman Mike Rim are tied for 24th with 75s, freshman Andrew Parr is tied for 55th with a 79 and junior David Tasker is tied for 68th after an 80.
"The conditions were very cold and windy and we got off to a slow start," A&M coach J.T. Higgins said. "But our guys showed a lot of heart and kept us in the golf tournament. We were starting to make up some ground in the second round when it got dark. If we can finish strong in the morning, we may have a chance to win the tournament. It's fun to be in the hunt."
