Texas A&M Head Football Coach Dennis Franchione announced the hiring of Les Koenning, Jr., as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach today. Koenning served as offensive coordinator at Alabama the past two seasons for Coach Franchione.
"I'm pleased Les will join our staff as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach," Franchione said. "He's done an excellent job of coordinating our offense the past two years. Our offensive unit was ranked #1 in total offense in the Southeastern Conference with an excellent balance between the run and the pass this past season. He's developed two, 1,000-yard passers this year and I think Les will do a great job here at Texas A&M."
Koenning, 43, is the son of long-time Texas high school coach Les Koenning, Sr.
The younger Koenning is a 1981 graduate of Texas where he played wide receiver for the Longhorns from 1977-80. He played on bowl teams each season and was named a team captain his senior campaign. Koenning is familiar with the Houston area having earned All-Greater Houston honors as a senior at Memorial High School.
After his collegiate playing days were over, Koenning moved into a graduate assistant position with Texas before moving on to Alabama to work on Ray Perkins' staff.
His first full-time stop came in 1985, Koenning served as recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach at Southwestern Louisiana. From USL, he moved to Mississippi State where he tutored quarterbacks and wide receivers from 1986-89.
Koenning continued to work with receivers at Rice (1990-93) and for a brief time at Duke (Dec. 1993) before coming to Texas A&M and working with wide receivers for three seasons from 1994-96.
After leaving Aggieland, Koenning worked on Jimmy Johnson's staff at the Miami Dolphins as an offensive assistant in 1997 and moved back to the collegiate ranks in 1998 serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Duke.
In 1999, Koenning served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Houston before joining Coach Franchione at TCU as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2000.
Koenning and his wife, Lisa, have two children, Les and Lana.
