Junior forward Nick Anderson has been declared ineligible for the rest of the 2002-03 season under Big 12 Conference academic guidelines, Texas A&M coach Melvin Watkins said Saturday.
"We feel very bad for Nick that he will not be able to play the rest of this season," Watkins said. "He isn't ineligible under Texas A&M or NCAA rules, but only under the Big 12 guidelines. If he played in most other conferences he would remain eligible, but that is the hand we've been dealt."
Anderson still will be allowed to practice with the team. He played in the Aggies first nine games this season, averaging 4.9 points and 3.4 rebounds. Anderson was the Aggies' second-leading scorer as a freshman and sophomore, earning a spot on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team in 2000-01.
Anderson scored eight points with six rebounds in the Aggies' 76-62 loss to Princeton on Friday in the first round of the Cable Car Classic. A&M plays Mississippi Valley State in the tournament's consolation game on Saturday.
