Texas A&M senior Sean Gilliland (Killeen, Texas/Harker Heights HS) is one of 30 student-athletes named to the 2002 Men's Golf Academic All-Big 12 Teams, the conference office said Tuesday.
Gilliland, an agronomy major, was named to the first-team for the third straight year. Last year, Gilliland also was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America Academic All-America team. As a sophomore, Gilliland made the All-Big 12 team after winning the Pepperdine Intercollegiate and placing fifth at the Big 12 Championships. This season, he ranks second on the team in scoring and tied for fifth at the Louisiana Classics in March.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the men's golf academic all-league squads consisted of 20 first-team members with 10 on the second-team.
First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.2 or better grade-point average, while the second-team are those who have a 3.0 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her or his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
Many of these student-athletes will be in competition at the sixth Big 12 Conference golf championships Monday and Tuesday at Prairie Dunes Golf & Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan., which has hosted the men's championship the previous five years. Baylor is defending Big 12 champion. The Bears defeated Oklahoma and Texas by 10 strokes last year. Oklahoma State has won three Big 12 titles - 1997, 1998, 2000. Kansas won the 1999 league crown. Complete results for the 2002 Big 12 Conference golf championships will be available at the league's website at www.big12sports.com.
