Selected quotes from today's press luncheon with Texas A&M Head Coach R.C. Slocum:
Evaluation of the rushing offense:
"We are still not were we want to be. We didn't (get much push up front), we didn't throw well enough early in the game to really dictate anything to them. The passing game ties in to the running game. They played an eight-man front against us too many times. We should have made them pay for that. We had some chances where we were going to (make them pay) but we dropped some passes, we didn't hit some passes that we should have hit, so that's part of it. We had penalties. We had first and 15, trying to get 10 is hard enough, if you give yourself 15 that's difficult. And, we are not blocking like we need to block, so it is a combination of a bunch of things."
Saturday's offensive struggles:
"My take overall is that we were not a whole lot different than a lot of people around the country in college football. I would like to have taken the opening drive and gone down the field with it. I look around and our friends over at Austin have a great collection of offensive players and are picked by a lot of people to win the national championship, I think they had 235 yards of total offense and didn't score a point in the second half. I watched Oklahoma, another team picked to win the national championship and it was three to nothing at halftime. I am in the same boat as those guys, I am disappointed that we didn't execute better or perform better."
Playing on the road:
"If you are going to be a good team you have to be able to play on the road. Over the years people talk about the home field advantage and there is no question that most teams do have a home field advantage. Most teams do have a better record at home than on the road."
Playing time at quarterback:
"What people chant or what people do is someone else's deal. Our decision as coaches will not be influenced by any of that. My intention has always been to play the player who gives us the best chance to win and we will continue to do that. I am pleased that we have several guys to be considered to play quarterback. I think that is a positive. We've got more than one guy that some people feel like has a chance to go out and play and be successful. I have always experienced that competition brings the best out in people and there is certainly nothing wrong with bringing the best out in your quarterback position."
Backup quarterback:
"Mark (Farris) is a senior and somebody is going to take over at quarterback next year. I would like to get as good a feel as I can this year as to who that person is going to be, as well as having someone there in the event that something happens to Mark."
