COLLEGE STATION, Texas- The No. 24 ranked Texas A&M softball team improved it's record on the season to 7-3 after two wins in the opening day of play in the St. Joseph's Aggie Invitational I.
In their first game the Ags beat BYU 9-1 as they run ruled their second opponent of the season. The Aggies runs came off of 14 hits and one error. The Aggies dominated at the plate as five players finished the game with multiple hits and eight of the nine batters had at least one hit.
Senior catcher Selena Collins went three for four at the plate with two RBI's and two runs scored and Sophomore Adrian Gregory was two for four with 3 RBI's and two runs scored as they provided the bulk of the runs on the afternoon for the Aggies.
Junior right hander Jessica Slataper pitched her fifth complete game of the season in route to her third win. Slataper faced 20 batters and struck out five and walked two without earning a run in her five innings of work.
In the second game junior pitcher Lindsay Wilhelmson earned her first complete game of the season and her second win as the Aggies defeated McNeese State. The Aggies came back and beat the Cowgirls five to two after falling behind two to nothing in the first innning.
After the shaky start Wilhelmson settled in and shut the Cowgirls out the rest of the way allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
Second baseman Adrian Gregory had the hot bat as she was four for four with one RBI and two runs scored. On the day Gregory was six for eight with four runs scored and four RBI's. As a team the Aggies had nine hits and struck out only once as they went to the plate 25 times.
In the early game of the tournament BYU downed McNeese 7-1 as they held the Cowgirls in check the entire game. McNeese failed to capitalize on eight hits and two errors by the Cougars as they left 11 runners on base including ending two innings with the bases loaded.
The St. Joseph Aggie Invitational I continues tomorrow with BYU and McNeese playing at noon, A&M and BYU at 2:30 and McNeese St. and A&M at 5:00.
