The 21st ranked Texas A&M softball team won one and lost one today in Palo Alto at the Stanford Classic while senior slugger Selena Collins set a new career home run mark for the school. The Aggies beat the 49'ers of Long Beach State 2-0 and lost to 12th ranked Georgia 2-1 in extra innings on the first day of tournament play.
In the first game Lindsay Wilhelmson got the start against Long Beach and earned her fifth win of the season after pitching a complete game striking out five and allowing no runs on five 49'er hits. The junior right-hander helped her own cause by hitting her second home run of the year in the top of the second inning to break a 0-0 tie and give the Aggies a 1-0 lead over the 49'ers.
The score remained the same until the top of the sixth when senior catcher Selena Collins stepped to the plate with two outs and hit a line drive over the left field fence for her seventh home run of the season. The home run gave Collins 34 career round-trippers tying her for the all-time A&M mark previously set by Liz Mizera from 1985-'88.
Collins extended the record in the second game of the day against Georgia when she stepped to the plate in the top of the seventh trailing the Bulldogs 1-0 and broke up a no-hitter by blasting a shot over the center field fence. With her eighth four-bagger of the season and 35th of her career Collins tied the game and eventually sent it into extra innings where the Ags came up short in a 2-1 eight inning loss.
The Ags take the field again tomorrow against No. 11 Stanford at 1:15. Live stats for the game against Stanford will be available on the internet at AggieAthletics.com.
