Over 60 NFL coaches and scouts converged on Texas A&M's Netum Steed Strength and Conditioning Laboratory Wednesday for the Aggie football team's annual "Pro Day."
Showing off their skills were 15 seniors from the 2002 Aggie squad, as well as two former players. Taking part in Wednesday's activities were: CB Sammy Davis, DB/PK Matt Douglas, LB Brian Gamble, RB Dwain Goynes, LB Jessie Hunnicutt, WR Bethel Johnson, FB Stacy Jones, DB Terrence Kiel, SNP Chance Pearce, LB Jarrod Penright, TE Greg Porter, DL Ty Warren, RB Joe Weber, OL Taylor Whitley, and OL Billy Yates. Also working out for the scouts were former players QB Vance Smith and DB Wes Bautovich.
Among the 60 observers from the NFL were two current head coaches -- Green Bay's Mike Sherman (also general manager) and New Orleans' Jim Haslett. Sherman served as A&M's offensive line coach and later offensive coordinator before moving on to the Packers. Also in attendance were a pair of former A&M players, who are now working in the NFL --- Todd Howard of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Dennis Allen of the Atlanta Falcons.
"The whole day is so well organized," Sherman said. "It's an easy day for the NFL scouts. We're able to see a lot of people in an orderly fashion. It's probably the best pro day in all of college football."
Former A&M head football coach R.C. Slocum also came out to watch the 2002 seniors.
"I came here to offer encouragement and support," Slocum said. "I watched these guys come out of high school and develop as players and as people."
