After carding a two-under-par 286 in Friday's morning round, the Texas A&M men's golf team struggled to a 295 in the afternoon and is tied for sixth place after the first two rounds of the 52nd Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club.
The Aggies' 581 total trails tournament leader Arkansas (276-289=565) by 16 strokes going into Saturday's final round. San Diego State is in second at 572, followed by Baylor (575), BYU (577), Lamar (577), A&M (581), Kansas State (581), Colorado State (581), SMU (582), Alabama-Birmingham (584), Rhode Island (587), Iowa State (588), Texas-Arlington (590), Rice (592), Washington State (595), Texas Tech (596), Southwest Texas State (598), Notre Dame (599) and Louisiana-Lafayette (610).
"I was thrilled with how we played in the morning round," A&M coach J.T. Higgins said. "We were in third place and were in position for a really good tournament, but we slipped up in the afternoon round and dropped back. If we can put together a good final round, we have a chance to move up and beat some of the teams in our district."
A&M junior Stephen Reed is tied for fifth in the individual standings with a four-under-par total of 70-70=140, five strokes behind leader Mark Van Hoose of Lamar, who carded rounds of 69-66=135. Arkansas' Andrew Dahl is in second place at 65-71=136.
A&M freshman Andrew Parr also had a good day, posting rounds of 71-72=143 and is tied for 14th place.
"I was really pleased with how Stephen and Andrew played," Higgins said. "They were very solid both rounds and we kind of rode their backs. They pretty much kept us in the tournament."
Also for the Aggies, senior Shaun Helmle is tied for 54th at 73-76=149, junior David Tasker is tied for 70th at 74-77=151 ad junior Parker Briley is tied for 80th at 72-81=153.
