Texas A&M catcher Selena Collins was invited Monday to participate in the selection team camp for USA Softball. Collins joins 44 other players from around the nation who were invited to compete for a spot on two teams that will represent USA in international competition this summer. The camp will be held June 4-8 at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California.
Collins, a senior from Glendale, Arizona, has received numerous honors during her playing career at Texas A&M. She was named to the All-Big 12 first-team and to the All-American third-team in 2002 as well as being honored as the the Big 12 Player of the Year. She was awarded the Big 12 Player of the Week on two occasions last season and was named the 2002 Texas A&M Player of the Year as well as an All-Region Player as a freshman in 2000 and again as a junior last season. Collins was named to the NCAA All-Region Team in 2002 before competing with the USA Softball Elite team during the summer.
This season Collins leads the team in seven offensive categories including avg. (.307), slugging pct. (.693), on-base pct. (.484), RBI's (32), home runs (11), total bases (79) and walks (38). She also leads the Big 12 in several significant categories. The senior is tops in the league in home runs (11), walks (38) and slugging percentage (.693). She is second in on-base percentage (.484) as well as being in the top five in runs scored (30), doubles (9), RBI's (32), and total bases (79).
Collins and the 2003 Aggies are currently tied with Nebraska for third place in the Big 12 and are ranked 18th by the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 and 19th in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25.
The 2002 All-Big 12 player is one of five Big 12 players to receive an invitation and is the only Aggie on the list. The other Big 12 players invited are Cat Osterman and Lindsay Gardner from the University of Texas and Peaches James and Kim Ogee from Nebraska. The complete list of invitees is attached below.
