Texas A&M junior Parker Briley has been named to the 2003 Men's Golf Academic All-Big 12 Team, the league office announced Tuesday.
Briley is a finance major from Abilene. He has played in six tournaments this season and ranks fifth on the team in scoring. He is among 31 student-athletes named to the Academic All-Big 12 Team.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the men's golf academic all-league squad consisted of 23 first team members combined with eight on the second team. First team members are those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
Many of these student-athletes will compete at the Big 12 Conference Men's Golf Championships next Monday and Tuesday at Southern Hills Golf Course in Tulsa, Okla., site of the 2001 U.S. Open. Texas is the defending Big 12 champion after winning the 2002 event by one stroke over second-place Oklahoma State and three strokes over third-place Oklahoma. OSU's Anders Hultman and OU's John Kidwell shared medalist honors, with Hultman winning a playoff.
Last year's men's golf title was the first for Texas in the Big 12. Four different schools have won Big 12 men's golf championships. OSU captured the 1997, 1998 and 2000 tournaments, Kansas won the 1999 crown and Baylor the 2001 event.
Complete results for the championships will be available at the league's web site at www.big12sports.com.
