Selena Collins, Texas A&M's Female Athlete of the Year, wrapped up her stellar collegiate career by earning a spot on the 2003 USA Softball Elite Team for the second year in a row. Collins, a catcher from Glendale, Ariz., will represent the United States in competitions in Canada and San Francisco this summer.
"I am exited for the opportunity," Collins said. "I was nervous walking from class because I knew I would find out at 11 o'clock. It was exciting for me to see my name on one of the two lists and know that I would be a part of the team."
The Elite Team will compete in the Canada Cup on July 4-13 before traveling to San Francisco to take on Australia in an exhibition series on July 15-20.
According to A&M coach Jo Evans, Collins made an indelible mark on the A&M program during her career and is worthy of representing her school and country.
"I'm very excited for Selena to be back in the USA Softball National Team process," Evans said. "Being chosen to compete on the USA Elite team means that Selena is considered one of the 30 best softball players in the United States. That's a great compliment to her and a testament to the hard work and effort she has put into her game this past year. She is an outstanding representative of Texas A&M University and we are fortunate to have had her in our softball program the past four years."
While at A&M Collins was honored as an All-American (2002), All-Big 12 Player (three times), All-Midwest Region player (three times), Big 12 Player of the Year (2002), and Texas A&M Female Athlete of the Year (2003).
