Texas A&M outside hitter Laura Jones has been named the Big 12 Volleyball Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
The sophomore from Arlington, Texas, earned the honor following a dominating all-around performance at the season-opening Duke Invitational last weekend in Durham, N.C., in which she collected MVP accolades after leading the Aggies to a 3-0 record and the championship title.
Jones took match-high honors in points and kills in every match, including 20-plus kill performances against both Pittsburgh and Duke. In addition to posting double figures in kills in every match, she also reached double digits in digs in every match, including a career-high 18 digs against Pittsburgh and a match-high 17 digs against Duke.
Jones finished the tournament with a team-leading 5.7 kills, 4.8 digs and 6.6 points per game, as well as a team-leading 0.5 aces per game.
Jones and the Aggies go for their second consecutive tournament title this weekend as they participate in the Michigan Pepsi Challenge, Sept. 5-7, in Ann Arbor, Mich. A&M opens the tournament Friday against No. 22 Louisville at 2:30 p.m. (CDT) at Cliff Keen Arena. The Aggies meet the host Wolverines Saturday at 6 p.m. and conclude the tournament against Murray State
