The Texas A&M men's golf team carded rounds of 290-298=588 on Friday and is tied for fifth place at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at the University of New Mexico's Championship Golf Course. The final round is scheduled for Saturday.
No. 8-ranked Arizona State leads the tournament with an eight-under-par total of 282-286=568, 10 strokes ahead of No. 20 New Mexico, which is in second at 291-287=578. Texas Tech is in third (579), followed by No. 7 UNLV (586), A&M (588), Stanford (588), San Diego State (588), BYU (589), Toledo (589), Pepperdine (589), No. 11 Arizona (595), Colorado State (596), Baylor (598), Texas-El Paso (599), Colorado (601), New Mexico State (605), No. 16 North Carolina State (606), Hawaii (606) and Air Force (613).
Texas Tech's William Haddrell (70-67=137) and Hawaii's Matthew Kodama (68-69=137) are tied for the individual lead, two strokes ahead of defending NCAA champion Alejandro Canizares of Arizona State (67-72=139).
Senior David Tasker paced the Aggies' strong first-round effort with a three-under-par 69, but struggled to a 78 in the wind-swept second round and is tied for 31st place with a 147 total. Also for A&M, sophomore Andrew Parr is tied for 12th (73-72=145), senior Parker Briley is tied for 20th (73-73=146), senior Stephen Reed is tied for 53rd (75-75=150) and junior David Schultz is tied for 69th (75-78=153).
Competing as individuals for A&M and not counting toward the team score, freshman Tyler Kief is tied for 84th (73-83=156) and sophomore Rand Arbuckle is tied for 98th (83-76=159).
"I'm pleased with how we played, especially in the morning round," A&M coach J.T. Higgins said. "Tasker played great in the first round. The wind picked up in the afternoon and we also got a little tired. We haven't played 36 holes in a day since last spring, but overall I liked what I saw."
