Gabby Guerre posted a triple-double to lead No. 12 Kansas State to a 30-28, 30-28, 19-30, 30-21 victory over No. 22 Texas A&M in front of 1,392 at G. Rollie White Coliseum.
The Wildcats improve to 14-3 overall and 4-1 in Big 12 Conference play. A&M suffers its second consecutive loss and falls to 10-5, 2-3.
There were four lead changes and 13 ties in the opening frame. K-State built its largest lead at 25-22 before A&M rallied for three unanswered points. The teams exchanged points with A&M tying the score for the last time at 27. A kill by Guerre and an attack error by A&M put the Wildcats at game point. Melissa Munsch got a kill for A&M, but Lisa Martin responded with one of her match-high 18 kills to give K-State the 30-28 win.
There were seven lead changes and 12 ties in Game 2. The Wildcats took the lead for good at 21-20 following a kill by Valeria Hejjas. K-State then built its biggest lead at 29-23 before A&M made a late run. The Aggies rallied for five consecutive points before Martin ended the game with a kill.
A&M got on track in the third game and never trailed, outhitting the Wildcats, .241 to .121. The Aggies were leading 14-11 when they erupted for seven consecutive points to build a 10-point cushion. Jayna Baker posted a kill and teamed with Kendra Felder for a block to give A&M its biggest lead of the game at 29-17. K-State got a kill and block but then served into the net to give the Aggies a 30-19 win.
An early eight-point K-State scoring spree spelled doom for the Aggies in the fourth game. A&M was leading, 2-0, when the Wildcats went on their decisive run. A&M was unable to dig out of the hole, never getting closer than five points for the remainder of the game. K-State was leading 20-13 when it recorded three kills and a block to take its biggest lead of the night, 24-13. A&M got within eight at 24-16 before the teams traded point for point to close out the game and the match.
Munsch led A&M with 16 kills and a .429 hitting efficiency. Left-side hitters Laura Jones and Beth Skypala added 10 kills apiece but were held to a combined .109 hitting percentage. Felder led the Aggies in blocks with a career-high eight blocks, and Skypala tallied a team-high 15 digs.
Four other Wildcats joined Martin in double-figure kills. Lauren Goehring, who is ranked third in the nation in hitting percentage, tallied 16 kills and a .444 hitting percentage as the Wildcats outhit A&M .240 to .206. Hejjas added 14 kills, and Cari Jensen and Guerre contributed 10 kills apiece, leading K-State to a 73-58 advantage in kills. Guerre completed her second career triple-double with 12 digs and 57 assists. Libero Laura Downey-Wallace posted a match-high 18 digs.
The Aggies return to action Wednesday, Oct. 8 as they play host to Texas Tech. First serve is at 7 p.m. at G. Rollie White Coliseum.
