Texas A&M senior wide receiver Jamaar Taylor suffered a season-ending injury to his right knee during the Aggies' game at Nebraska this past Saturday, announced A&M coach Dennis Franchione during his weekly media luncheon on Tuesday.
Taylor, from Mission, Texas, was injured early in the Nebraska game and did not record a reception. He leads the Aggies in receptions and receiving yards with 25 for 456.
One of the elite receivers in the Big 12 Conference, Taylor needed just 36 receiving yards to become the school's all-time leader. Instead, Taylor's A&M career ends with an impressive 1,705 yards on 108 catches with 10 touchdowns. He ranks No. 2 at A&M in all-time receiving yards and No. 3 on the all-time receptions list. Both records are held by Bethel Johnson (1999-02) with 1,740 yards and 117 receptions.
Taylor finishes with a school record six 100-yard receiving games. This season, his game averages of 5.0 catches and 91.2 receiving yards per game rank No. 10 and No. 6 in the Big 12.
One half of the most prolific receiving tandem in A&M history, Taylor and junior Terrence Murphy have combined for 199 receptions and 3,102 yards since 2001. It marks the most tandem yards ever at the school.
He played in 26 games for the Aggies during his career.
"Jamaar Taylor's season is over due to a season ending knee injury," Franchione said. "It is unfortunate for him and for us. He got so close to the record (A&M career receiving yards) and wasn't able to get that 36 yards he needed. I'm grateful for what he's done for this program and for the team, and we'll certainly miss him."
Franchione looks for senior Tim Van Zant and junior Jason Carter to see additional touches.
"Well, you know Tim Van Zant stepped in before when (Jamaar Taylor) tweaked his knee, so we'll kind of expect Tim to step in there again," Franchione said. "Jason Carter is playing more receiver and getting better there, so I think depending on whether we have to move him or not we can get a little more out of him."
The Aggies (3-4, 1-2) will host No. 18-ranked Oklahoma State on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in a game being televised regionally by ABC Sports.
