The Texas A&M men's golf team closed its fall season in grand fashion on Tuesday, firing a school-record 13-under-par 275 in the second round of the Barona Collegiate Cup in the morning, then closing with a 286 in the afternoon to finish tied for fifth place.
The second-round effort at the par-72 Barona Creek Golf Club broke the previous A&M record of 12-under-par 272 set at the 1992 Stanford Intercollegiate.
The Aggies' 54-hole total of 10-under-par 293-275-286=854 is the fifth-best in school history.
No. 24-ranked Colorado State won the 18-team tournament with a blazing score of 28-under-par 273-282-281=836, finishing six strokes ahead of runner-up Texas-El Paso (842). No. 21-ranked Brigham Young was third (845), followed by No. 20 New Mexico (850), A&M and Alabama-Birmingham (854).
A&M senior Stephen Reed paced the Aggies, tying for 18th in the individual standings with a four-under-par 74-68-70=212 total. Also for A&M, senior David Tasker tied for 30th (72-70-72=214), sophomore Andrew Parr (73-72-71=216) and junior David Schultz (74-69-73=216) tied for 35th and senior Parker Briley tied for 52nd (80-68-73=221). Freshman Peter Andrews, competing as an individual, tied for 85th (69-80-81=230).
"We didn't play well on Monday but we showed the type of golf we're capable of playing today," A&M coach J.T. Higgins said. "All five of the players in our lineup shot under par today. That's a great way for us to end the fall season and we hope it gives us some momentum going into the spring."
UTEP's Chris Baryla won the individual crown with a 17-under-par total of 69-63-67=199, three strokes better than runner-up Jimmy Cunningham of Denver (68-69-65=202).
The Aggies open their spring season at the John Burns Intercollegiate Feb. 18-20 in Hawaii.
