Aggies See First Spring Depth Chart

Two Texas A&M football players have changed positions according to the first depth chart issued by new head coach Dennis Franchione and his staff Tuesday.
Following the first scrimmage this past Saturday, junior Jason Carter moved from quarterback to the newly-created A-back position and redshirt freshman Chad Schroeder has moved from wide receiver to quarterback.
"Jason was very receptive to the move, which is in keeping with our main goal of finding the best players and getting them on the field," Franchione said. "He's too good an athlete to be standing over by me on the sideline. This gives us the opportunity to use his abilities, and still keep him in the thick of the offense in case we need him to return to quarterback."
Franchione described the A-back as a "multi-purpose" position that appears in several positions in formation and can be utilized as a running back or receiver.
"We had a similar case last year at Alabama with Shaud Williams when we had four good tailbacks," Franchione said, "and he wound up being our leading rusher."
A standout high school quarterback, Schroeder's move will most likely be temporary.
"He had a pulled hamstring and has not practiced much," Franchione said. "So this gives him a way to reduce the risk of reinjury and gives us a contingency plan for quarterback depth."
The only other position change was redshirt freshman Andy Matakis from linebacker to tight end at the outset of spring practice. Franchione said he will remain there throughout the spring.
Because Texas A&M is the Home of the 12th Man, the first depth chart lists every player on the spring roster. Franchione added a note of caution in releasing the chart.
"This must be taken in context of what it is -- the first evaluation after the first full scrimmage and just eight days of practice," Franchione said. "It's a starting point. The competition remains wide open in the last two weeks of the spring and going into two-a-days in August."
He also listed 15 offensive positions, plus placekicker, because the multiple offense that Franchione and offensive coordinator Les Koenning use comprises a variety of receivers, depending on the formation. There are two tight end designations -- TE and W -- and there are four receiver positions.
Practices are open to the public, but fans are encouraged to call the practice hotline at 979-458-2185 to register and for other instructions and information.
The Aggies will conclude spring drills with a Maroon & White Game, presented by AT&T Wireless, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 12 at Kyle Field. Advance tickets are $5 and tickets the day of the game will be $7. For more ticket information contact the athletic ticket office at 1-888-99-AGGIE or 979-845-2311, or access the spring football information at AggieAthletics.com.
