With over 60 high school and college coaches looking on, the Texas A&M football team drilled and scrimmaged in full pads for two hours on Wednesday at the grass practice fields.
"We always have an open door policy for the high school coaches," A&M head coach Dennis Franchione said. "We like to have them here and they like to come. It gives us a chance to exchange ideas."
The Aggies paid special attention to short yardage offense and defense.
"We've got to get better in short yardage situations," Franchione said. "I thought the offense did some good things today, but, by the same token, I was disappointed in the defense. The defense gave up some plays. We want them to bounce back and come back strong on Friday."
Franchione got Wednesday's workout started on an enthusiastic note by moving the "Aggie Drill" to the beginning of the workout, which was a deviation from usual schedule and a surprise to the team. The Aggie Drill pits a blocker against tackler in a one-on-one situation with a ball carrier trying to get past.
"It's an aggressive drill and the players really enjoy it," Coach Fran said. "We wanted to jumpstart today's practice and put some 'go' to it. It creates a lot of fire and enthusiasm."
The Aggies' next practice will be on Friday at the grass practice field. On Saturday, the Aggies will have their second of three spring scrimmages on Kyle Field. Practices are open to the public, but fans are encouraged to call the practice hotline at 979-458-2185 to register and for other instructions and information.
The Aggies will conclude spring drills with a Maroon & White Game, presented by AT&T Wireless, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 12 at Kyle Field. Advance tickets are $5 and tickets the day of the game will be $7.
