The No. 18 Aggie Softball team brought home their first victory of the season with a 6-1 win over North Texas on Wednesday. The Aggies were able to fight off the Mean Green and the weather as they endured three rain-delays on the way to the win. Right-fielder Sherah Atkins and pitcher Jill Weynand turned in solid performances, pacing the Aggies to victory. Atkins, a senior from Clute, Texas, provided the offensive heroics while Weynand, a red-shirt freshman from Frisco, Texas, kept UNT at bay from the circle.

Atkins delivered the game winning hit with a fifth-inning grand slam breaking a one-all tie. Atkins crushed Katy Maxey's pitch over the wall in right-center giving the Aggies a 5-1 lead. On the night Atkins went 3-for-3 with a single, a triple and the fifth-inning grand slam.

In the circle freshman right-hander Jill Weynand produced a stellar performance in her collegiate debut. Weynand, who red-shirted last year due to injury, took the mound for the first time as an Aggie and earned her first win striking out nine of the 20 batters she faced. Weynand threw a perfect game through three and one half innings before giving up UNT's first of two hits.

The Aggies first took the lead in the bottom of the third when freshman speedster Sharonda McDonald (Houston, Texas) was plated by a Lindsay Wilhelmson single that slipped through the left side. McDonald scored from third after reaching base on a bunt single and stealing second and third.

The Mean Green tied the game in the fifth inning when freshman Susan Waters hit a solo home run to left field.

The Aggies retook the lead and command of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on Atkins' grand slam. Scoring on the home run was freshman pinch runner Lisa Gorzykci, sophomore first baseman Lindsay Park and junior third baseman Morgan Hebert. A&M added one more run in the fifth when junior co-captain Adrian Gregory doubled down the left field line scoring McDonald from second.

As a team A&M tallied six runs on 11 hits while only striking out two times.

McDonald, in her first collegiate game, hit out of the leadoff spot and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three stolen bases.

The wet and muddy field couldn't keep the Aggies from showing their team speed as they stole six bases on six attempts.

The next home appearance for the Aggies' will be on Wednesday, February 11, when they host the University of Houston in a double header beginning at 3 p.m. The Aggies' next game is against Stephen F. Austin on Sunday, February 8, in Nacgodoches, Texas, the teams will play a double header. Check AggieAthletics.com for live stats.
