The Texas A&M men's golf team fired a 5-under par 283 on Wednesday in the first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate at the Leilehua Golf Course. The tournament continues with 18 holes each on Thursday and Friday.

The Aggies are tied for eighth place but just seven strokes back of leader New Mexico who shot a 276. Utah is in second at 278, followed by BYU (279), UNLV (280), SMU (281), Colorado State (282), San Jose State (282), A&M, San Diego State (283), California (284), UTEP (285), Arizona (285), Denver (285), Colorado (286), UC Santa Barbara (289), Pacific (293), Hawai'i-Hilo (294), San Francisco (294) and Hawai'i (297).

"It's great to start the season with a good round and be in the hunt for the team title," A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "Our guys are in a great position and we're excited to see how we do tomorrow."

Junior David Schultz and senior David Tasker paced the Aggies on Monday as both are tied for 23rd place with a 2-under-par 70. Sophomore Andrew Parr shot a 71 and is in 38th place, while senior Stephen Reed is in 47th with a 72 and senior Parker Briley is in 71st with a 74.

Five golfers are tied for the individual lead after the first round with a 5-under-par 67.
