Texas A&M Head Football Coach Dennis Franchione named Johnny Barr as the new coordinator of on-campus recruiting at Texas A&M.

"I am pleased to have Johnny join our staff here at Texas A&M," Coach Fran said. "He is a terrific recruiter and he will do an excellent job. He has recruited the state of Texas for many years and is well respected. In addition to coordinating our on-campus recruiting, Johnny will be responsible for our football camps, clinics, the Quarterback Club as well as serve as our liaison to the Letterman's Association."

Barr coached safeties at Texas Tech this past season. His other coaching stops have included Kansas, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Southwest Texas State and Lamar University.

"I've been coaching for 32 years and I am more excited about this new challenge than I have been for most anything else, except the birth of our twin girls last week," Barr said. "I am very excited to join Coach Fran and the staff at Texas A&M. I have known several members of the coaching staff for many years and I know they are quality coaches, as well as outstanding individuals."

Barr lettered three years as a wide receiver at the University of Oklahoma and helped the Sooners win the Big Eight Championship twice. He began his coaching career at OU in 1970 as a freshman coach. He worked at both the high school and junior college levels before taking the secondary coaching job at Lamar University in 1979. From 1983-85, he served as the defensive coordinator at Southwest Texas State.

A native of Atlanta, Texas, Barr has a brother who graduated from Texas A&M in 1968.

Barr and his wife, Christi, were blessed with twin girls, Allie and Caroline, in February of 2004.
