Freshman right hander Christina Smith improved to 3-3 Saturday with a 2-0 win over St. Joseph's at the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee. Smith threw a complete game and did not allow a run on seven hits while striking out two. Smith improved her staff-best ERA to 0.86 on the season.
The Aggies (14-11) gave Smith an early lead in the first by scoring two runs on four hits while capitalizing on a St. Joseph throwing error. Centerfielder Sharonda McDonald led off the inning with a bunt single, stole second and then scored the Ags first run when second baseman Sherah Atkins hit a single to left field. On the throw home St. Joseph catcher Jill Clementi missed the throw and allowed McDonald to score from third. Leftfielder Jana James scored the second run on a single by Kristin Gunter. James reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and moved to third when Adrian Gregory hit single to left field.
"I thought Christina Smith did a great job today. She is injured and banged up a bit so it was good to see her out there and throw a complete. Really they didn't hit the ball hard all day long. It is nice to get another win. Now we are sitting in second place in our pool and we just have to get another win to come out in the top two. That will put us in the Gold Bracket and give us a chance to win the tournament."
A&M continues play in the tourney when they take on Robert Morris at 1 p.m. (CST) at Messer Park in Tallahassee.
