Senior right hander Jessica Kapchinski mowed down Princeton with a season-high 14 strikeouts as the Texas A&M softball team knocked off the Tigers 6-0 in their first game of the Kia Klassic. With the win the Aggies improve to 18-11 and are winners of their last five games.
Freshman speedster Sharonda McDonald gave the Aggies the early lead when she led the game off with a bunt single, advanced to second on a ground out by right fielder Rocky Spencer and then scored when left fielder Jana James ripped a grounder off the pitcher's leg that rolled in to left field. Shortstop Adrian Gregory put A&M up 2-0 when designated player Kristin Gunter hit a double to left field scoring her from first after she reached on a fielder's choice.
Spencer doubled the Aggies lead in the fifth with her second home run of the season scoring pinch runner Lisa Gorzycki from third. Gorzycki was running for first baseman Lindsay Park after she reached on a catcher's interference.
Catcher Nicole Robinson added two more runs to the Aggie lead with her fifth home run of the season in the top of the sixth. Robinson's round-tripper scored Gregory from third and knocked Tiger starter Erin Snyder out of the game. Gregory reached base on a fielding error by the second baseman before stealing second and third.
Kapchinski was dominant from the mound as she threw her third complete game and third shutout of the season in her sixth start.
The Aggies will play their final game of the day against No. 9 Washington beginning at approximately 9:20 p.m (CST).
A&M closes out pool play on Friday when they take on No. 13 Pacific at 1 p.m. (CST). Bracket play begins Friday night and continues through Sunday.
