The Texas A&M football team opened its 2004 spring drills with a two-and-a-half hour workout in shorts and helmets on Monday at the grass practice fields.

Second-year Aggie head coach Dennis Franchione said there was no comparison from last year to the 2004 spring drills.

"It's totally different," Franchione said. "The players had a much better feel for what was expected of them. Year two is always much easier because the players have been through this before. It was much less cumbersome and we practiced with excellent pace."

Monday's workout also marked the first practice for quarterback Stephen McGee, as well as fellow newcomers DeQawn Mobley and Aaron Brown. The three members of the 2004 signing class joined the team in January.

"It was good to see Stephen out there," Franchione said. "I was impressed with the way he looked, but I was impressed with a lot of the players I saw out here. I thought we practiced with a lot of bounce. You never know how players are going to be right after spring break, but I thought we moved around really well."
