The Texas A&M football team put on full pads for the first time this spring and drilled for two-and-a-half hours in the rain on Wednesday at the grass practice fields.

"I think they worked hard, and were excited to be out there," second-year head coach Dennis Franchione said. "Weather-wise, it was a good day for practice. They didn't let the rain bother them one bit. They were fired up to have some contact."

The first day in full pads also meant the first "Aggie Drill" of the 2004 spring drills. The "Aggie Drill" is basically a rapid-fire series of "middle drills" that progress across the field and back.

"The players knew period 12 was going to be the Aggie Drill and they were looking forward to it," Franchione said. "It's a high-enthusiasm drill, and everyone gets excited and involved. They get excited about the good hits, or getting off a block and making a tackle, and that's the way we want it to be. We want them to be excited about going to that drill."
