Texas A&M center fielder Sharonda McDonald and pitcher Jessica Kapchinski were named the Big 12 Player and Pitcher of the Week by the Big 12 office on Tuesday. McDonald hit .545 last week while Kapchinski was 3-0.
McDonald opened the week going 1-for-4 in the 6-0 win against Texas last Wednesday. The Houston freshman stole home for the Aggies' fourth run. A&M swept Kansas in a doubleheader (8-0, 7-3) last Saturday and in game one McDonald was 3-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base. In game two she was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. She recorded her first extra-base hit (triple) and first RBI on the same play. She also had a sacrifice hit and a stolen base in the game. For the week she hit .545, scored five runs, and was 3-for-4 in stolen bases.
Kapchinski earned all three wins for A&M on last week and improved to 6-1 in conference. The Humble, Texas, senior right hander has not allowed an earned run in her 39.2 innings of work in Big 12 games. Kapchinski threw a two-hit shutout against Texas. She then started game one against Kansas and struck out nine batters in six innings while only surrendering one walk and one hit. Kapchinski then threw four innings in relief in game two and earned the win without giving up a hit. For the week she posted a 0.00 ERA and allowed a .056 batting average.
The Aggies (25-16, 7-1) are currently in second place in the Big 12 and will carry a five-game winning streak in to Wednesday night's game with third-place Baylor (37-9, 7-2). First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex.
