The Texas A&M softball team won their seventh consecutive game improving to 9-1 in conference, and 27-16 overall, as they combined for 11 runs on 13 hits in an 11-1 six-inning run-rule win over Texas Tech (19-29, 1-10) at Rocky Johnson Field.
Offensively, right fielder Rocky Spencer led the way as she was 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Eight other Aggies had a hit in the game including freshman Lisa Gorzycki who recorded her first collegiate hit and RBI on the same play.
"This was a great team win," commented A&M Head Coach Jo Evans. "We got a little bit of a slow start but I thought we showed great patience. In the second round of at-bats we started swinging the bats and consistently hitting throughout the order. It seems like everybody contributed today. Collectively, it was a great win for us."
Jessica Kapchinski earned the win, improving to 12-5 overall and 8-1 in league play, after throwing a complete game and allowing one run on four hits while striking out six batters.
The Aggies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third when Sherah Atkins scored on a throwing error by Texas Tech catcher Lisa Lawler. After reaching on an infield single Sharonda McDonald broke for second, with Atkins at third, and Lawler, trying to catch Atkins in a rundown, threw the ball in to left field allowing Atkins to score.
A&M did the most damage in the fifth by scoring five runs off of five hits and three errors. After singling to left, Adrian Gregory gave the Aggies a 2-0 lead when Lady Raider shortstop Heather Parker made a fielding error on a Laura Durham grounder. Gregory scored from third after Kristin Gunter moved her over on a sac bunt.
Durham was next to score when designated player Lindsay Wilhelmson singled to left and moved to second on a throwing error by the left fielder. Nicole Robinson advanced to third on the play. Pinch runner Joy Davis, in for Robinson, made it 4-0 when she scored on McDonald's second hit of the game.
After McDonald stole second, Rocky Spencer singled up the middle scoring pinch runner Lisa Gorzycki and McDonald, giving the Aggies a 6-0 lead. Gorzycki was running for Wilhelmson.
Durham made it 7-0 when she scored her second run of the game when Gorzykci, who stayed in to hit for Wilhelmson, singled up the middle.
Lindsay Park made it 9-0 in the sixth when she singled up the middle, scoring Spencer from third and James from second. Spencer reached on a single, moved to second when James followed with another single and then moved to third on a Gregory walk. Morgan Hebert then made it 10-0, scoring Gregory, on A&M's 13th hit of the game.
Park became the Aggies' final run when Gorzycki secured her second hit of the game on a sharply hit grounder to third.
Texas Tech scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth. The run was the first earned run that Kapchinski has given up in conference play, a streak of 52 innings, spanning nine games.
The Aggies and the Lady Raiders close out their series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Rocky Johnson Field.
