Five Texas A&M golfers are among 28 student-athletes who have been named to the 2004 Men's Golf Academic All-Big 12 Team, the league office announced Tuesday.

A&M's five honorees are the most of any Big 12 school this year.

Senior David Tasker and senior Parker Briley and redshirt freshman Peter Andrews made the first team while sophomore Brook Gerky and reshirt freshman Tyler Kief made the second team.

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the men's golf academic all-league squad consisted of 18 first team members combined with 10 on the second team. First team members are those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.

Many of these student-athletes will compete at the eighth annual Big 12 Conference Men's Golf Championship April 26-27 for the seventh time in

eight years at Prairie Dunes Golf & Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. Texas is the two-time defending Big 12 champion after firing an 894 last year. Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan was 1993 medalist with a 208. In the seven previous Big 12 Men's Championships, Oklahoma State has captured three Big 12 titles followed by Texas with two, and Kansas and Baylor with one each.
