Texas A&M centerfielder Sharonda McDonald was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament team on Saturday. McDonald, a freshman from Houston Dobie, led the team with a .400 average and scored both the Aggie runs in their three tournament games while stealing two bases in two attempts. McDonald was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year at the softball banquet on Wednesday.
"Sharonda continues to do what she has done all year," head coach Jo Evans stated. " Her speed and ability to get on base puts a lot of pressure on the defense and sets the table for her teammates. I am proud of her because she has been playing injured but she continues to produce at the highest level. She will be an impact player in this conference for years to come."
The No. 22 Aggie softball team has a 32-20 record and they await a bid to the NCAA Regional tournament that begins on Thursday. The eight host schools for the tournament were announced last week and the field of 64 will be announced Sunday between 7 and 8 p.m. (CDT) on ESPN News. The Aggies are expected to receive an at-large bid to compete in the tournament for the third consecutive season. The last two seasons the Aggies have advanced to the regional final. Of Big 12 schools, Baylor and Nebraska will host along with Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, UCLA and Stanford.
