Slade Weishuhn of Wall, Texas, has signed a national letter-of-intent to play college basketball at Texas A&M, Aggies head coach Billy Gillispie said Tuesday.
Weishuhn, a 6-foot-9, 205-pound forward, averaged 20.2 points, 11.8 rebounds and 8.2 blocks per game last year for Wall High School, leading the team to a sparkling 31-3 record that included a perfect 10-0 district mark. He also made 26 three-point field goals. Wall is located near San Angelo in West Texas.
Weishuhn earned District 2-2A most valuable player honors and also was named first-team all-region, second-team all-state and academic all-state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. He also was recruited by Houston, Texas-El Paso and Texas Tech.
"Slade has a chance to have a great impact on our program," Gillipsie said. "Although he's 6-9 and has a chance to grow some more, he will probably be more of a perimeter player for us. He definitely has his best basketball in front of him and there aren't many guys who block eight shots a game. He's from a hard-working, athletic family and has the kind of work ethic and attitude we want to recruit."
He has been selected to play in the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game on July 26 in Houston, where he will be joined on the North Team by fellow A&M recruit Dominique Kirk of Dallas' Bryan Adams High School.
Weishuhn's uncle, Clayton Weishuhn, was an All-American linebacker at Angelo State and played five seasons (1982-87) with the National Football League's New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers.
