Buzz Williams has been named an assistant men's basketball coach at Texas A&M, Aggies coach Billy Gillispie said Wednesday.
"Buzz is a good friend and I've seen him grow and develop as a coach over the years," Gillispie said. "He's consistently been able to recruit top Texas players and we think he'll be able to do that here."
The 31-year-old Williams has served as an assistant coach at Colorado State since 2000 and was the Rams' recruiting coordinator. He previously served as an assistant at Northwestern State (1999-00), Texas A&M-Kingsville (1998-99) and Texas-Arlington (1994-98).
"I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to be at Texas A&M," Williams said. "I'm humbled by the fact that coach Gillipsie is allowing me to be a part of his first staff here and I'm anxious to attack the challenge ahead of us. I'm excited about the future of Aggie basketball."
Williams helped land one of the nation's top recruiting classes at Colorado State in 2000, and at Northwestern State he helped land the highest-rated recruiting class in Southland Conference history. At UTA, he recruited a conference freshman of the year and the first Academic All-American in school history.
From 1992-94, Williams was a student assistant coach at Oklahoma City University, helping the team to the 1994 NAIA national championship after it advanced to the Sweet 16 the previous season. He served in the same capacity at Navarro College from 1990-92 as the team built a two-year record of 45-17 and won consecutive conference titles.
A native of Van Alstyne, Texas, Williams and his wife, the former Corey Norman, have two children ? 2-year-old daughter Zera and 1-year-old son Calvin.
Williams joins former University of Houston head coach Alvin Brooks on Gillispie's staff.
