The 2004 Texas A&M baseball team is proud to announce its annual team award winners, as voted on by the players on Monday afternoon.
Senior Cory Patton earned the Marion Pugh Most Valuable Player award and the Loraine B. and William G. "Breezy" Breazeale RBI Award. The Owasso, Okla., native finished the season batting .326 with a team-leading 18 doubles, 11 home runs and 67 RBI. Patton was selected as an All-Big 12 first-team outfielder after being named to the second team as a junior. In his two years as an Aggie, Patton accumulated 33 doubles, 24 homers and 125 RBI. From is outfield position, he recorded 15 outfield assists. Patton was drafted in the sixth round by the Toronto Bluejays.
Jason Meyer, a red-shirt freshman from Abilene, Texas, earned the C.E. "Pat" Olsen Most Outstanding Pitcher award. After sitting out last season rehabbing an elbow surgery, Meyer became a dominant force on the mound for the Aggies. Meyer started the season as the Aggies short reliever, accumulating a record of 4-0 with three saves out of the bullpen. He moved to the starting rotation during the second week of Big 12 Conference play and stifled opposing hitters with his command of three different pitches. Meyer finished the season with a record of 8-2 and a sparkling ERA of 2.89. In 106 innings of work, Meyer fanned 111 batters and allowed an opponents' batting average of .235. He was named to the All-Big 12 first-team and dubbed the league's Freshman Pitcher of the Year.
The Wally Moon award is given to the player that showed the most improvement from the beginning of the year in September to the completion of the season. Junior outfielder Travis Bartek earned this year's Wally Moon Award. The Sparks, Nev., native started 28 of the last 30 games in the outfield, mostly in left. He hit safely in 13 of the last 15 games and improved his average from .224 to .287 during that span.
The prestigious Marion Pugh Spirit award was awarded to sophomore infielder Parker Dalton and junior pitcher Zach Jackson. Dalton, who missed the majority of the season due to a hand injury, and Jackson, who started a game on the mound in every weekend series this season, were the catalysts for the Aggies' team unity and chemistry. Jackson finished the season with a record of 10-7 and an ERA of 3.58, was drafted 32nd overall by Toronto.
The 2004 Texas A&M baseball team finished the season with a record of 42-22 and advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals by defeating the defending National Champion Rice Owls.
