Jerad Harklau of Rockwall will join the Texas A&M golf team this fall after transferring from SMU, head coach J.T. Higgins said Tuesday. Harklau will have two years of eligibility remaining.
"We are fortunate to have a player of Jerad's ability, character and experience joining our team," Higgins said. "He's an outstanding player with a proven collegiate record, which includes playing in this year's NCAA Championships. That kind of experience is hard to come by. He should really solidify our lineup and I expect him to make an immediate impact."
Harklau ranked second in scoring for the Mustangs last season with a 73.8 average. He led SMU to the Border Olympics title in April, tying for second with an eight-under-par total of 65-69-74=208, earning conference golfer of the week honors and setting a school 54-hole scoring record for a sophomore.
Harklau helped the Mustangs to the Western Athletic Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Championships. He also tied for seventh at the LSU Invitational and posted six top-25 finishes. He played in five tournaments as a freshman, including two varsity and three junior varsity events.
Harklau finished fourth at the 2002 Texas Class 5A State Tournament with rounds of 75-68=143, leading Rockwall High School to a runner-up finish. He twice was selected his team's most valuable player and was named to the prep All-America team.
