No. 20 Texas A&M got its offense back on track and cruised to a 30-22, 30-18, 30-19 victory over Oklahoma in front of 1,877 tonight at G. Rollie White Coliseum.
"We were hungry for a victory," A&M coach Laurie Corbelli said. "We knew we were capable of getting this win, and the team was really determined to make it a pretty win and to get the things done that we have been making changes on."
A&M never trailed in the entire match and all 14 players saw action as the Aggies posted their highest hitting percentage in the Big 12 season with a .396 efficiency.
"The team came in very well prepared," Corbelli said. "They worked very hard on their preparation, and everybody was ready to go."
Melissa Munsch, who moved back to the middle position after playing the left side the last few matches, and Laura Jones led the charge for the Aggies with 14 kills apiece and a combined .429 hitting percentage. Munsch also led the Aggies with 14 digs and seven blocks as A&M outblocked the Sooners, 12-5.
With the score tied at 10 in the opening game, A&M reeled off five unanswered points. Oklahoma got back within a point three times but could not get any closer as A&M outhit the Sooners, .500 to .156 for the game.
Things only got worse for the Sooners, who lost their eighth consecutive match and fell to 8-8 overall and 0-8 in the Big 12. A&M used an eight-point scoring run to pull away early in the second game and held Oklahoma to a -.026 hitting efficiency en route to the 30-18 victory.
A&M carried the momentum into the third game and jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Eight Aggies had at least one kill in the final game and helped hold the Sooners to a .021 hitting percentage to complete the sweep.
Joanna Schmitt was a bright spot for the Sooners, posting a double-double with team-highs of 16 kills and 11 digs, as well as a .303 hitting percentage.
The Aggies (9-5, 5-3 Big 12) return to G. Rollie Saturday to take on ninth-ranked and undefeated Texas in the second event of the State Farm Lone Star Showdown. Match time has been changed to 3 p.m.
A&M holds a 1-0 lead in the Lone Star Showdown series as the Aggie soccer team defeated the Longhorns, 3-1, in College Station last month.
