Texas A&M quarterback Reggie McNeal was named the national offensive player of the week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation Sunday after a masterful performance where he passed for two touchdowns and ran for two others to lead the Aggies to a win at then No. 15 Oklahoma State, 36-20, Saturday night in Stillwater, Okla.
McNeal, a junior from Lufkin, Texas, set a career-high in single game total offense with 386 yards as he completed 19-of-25 passes for 288 yards while rushing for 98 yards on 14 carries. It marked the third best total offense day ever by an Aggie.
"It's certainly a nice honor for Reggie," A&M coach Dennis Franchione said. "I think it's a reflection of his play and the play of his offensive unit. I think he would say the same thing if you asked him. Reggie's been playing very well and I thought he had an excellent game last night."
He increased the Aggies' streak of passes without an interception to a school record 181 attempts surpassing the 177 passes by Edd Hargett in 1968. McNeal has contributed 157 passes to the 181 total in addition to Ty Branyon's 17 and Dustin Long's seven.
During the game, McNeal distributed his nine first-half completions to eight different receivers. Ten different A&M receivers posted catches from McNeal against the Cowboys.
McNeal continues to impress on a national level as he is the only player averaging 70 rushing yards and 200 passing yards a game. He is the nation's only quarterback without an interception this season among the NCAA's top 100 leaders in passing efficiency.
McNeal ranks seventh nationally and second in the Big 12 Conference in total offense, and 15th nationally in pass efficiency.
The Aggies are 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the league's south division. A&M is ranked No. 17 by The Associated Press and No. 20 by the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Top 25 Poll.
The Aggies' AP ranking is the highest since 1999 when the team was ranked 13th prior to a trip to face Oklahoma in late October.
A&M hosts Colorado on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Kyle Field. The game will not be televised. Tickets may be purchased from the Athletic Ticket Office by calling 1-888-99-AGGIE.
