Laura Jones of Texas A&M was named the Big 12 Volleyball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Jones, a junior outside hitter, led the 20th-ranked Aggies to a 2-0 week, including a 3-1 upset over ninth-ranked and undefeated Texas at the State Farm Lone Star Showdown at G. Rollie White Coliseum on Saturday.
The Arlington, Texas, native tied a school record with 32 points and posted match highs of 27 kills and a .333 hitting percentage to lead A&M to its seventh straight victory against the Horns in College Station and the Aggies' second victory over a top 10 opponent this season. Defensively Jones tied for match-high honors with 20 digs to post her first 20-20 performance of the season. In addition, she tallied a season-high five blocks as A&M recorded a conference season-high 17 blocks while holding the Longhorns to seven.
In a sweep against Oklahoma earlier in the week, Jones tied for team-high honors in kills with 14. She also recorded a .393 hitting percentage in the match as the Aggies posted a Big 12 season-high .396 hitting percentage against the Sooners.
For the week, Jones led A&M with a .352 hitting efficiency, and 5.86 kills, 4.14 digs and 6.86 points per game.
Jones and the No. 20 Aggies (10-5, 6-3 Big 12) conclude the first half of the conference season at Colorado, Wednesday 8 p.m. (CT) at the Coors Events Center in Boulder. The team then treks to Lubbock, Texas, for a 1 p.m. match against Texas Tech Saturday to begin the second half of conference play.
