COLLEGE STATION, Texas- The Texas A&M softball team opens its fall exhibition season on Tueday when the Aggies play host to Northeast Texas Community College in a doubleheader at the Aggie Softball Complex beginning at 4 p.m. Admission is free.
"The fall season is an important gauge to where we are and what we need to work on for the upcoming season," A&M head coach Jo Evans stated. "Our players have been practicing hard for the past few weeks and they are excited to get on the field and play. It is always exciting to see the freshmen and returning players take the field and play together for the first time."
The Aggies are coming off of their best Big 12 finish in history as they posted an 11-game conference win streak earning them a second-place finish in the Big 12.
Head Coach Jo Evans, entering her ninth season at the helm, returns 12 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's team that went 33-22 overall and advanced to the NCAA regionals for the third consecutive year while placing six players on the All-Big 12 team.
In 2004, Evans was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year, senior hurler Jessica Kapchinski was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and freshman speedster Sharonda McDonald was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year. Along with Kapchinski and McDonald, four other Aggies were named to the 2004 All-Big 12 team. Shortstop Adrian Gregory joined Kapchinski and McDonald on the first team while Jana James (outfielder), Rocky Spencer (outfielder) and Nicole Robinson (catcher) were named to the second team.
Along with her returners, Evans welcomes in five freshmen that look to make an immediate impact on the program. Evans signed Jami Lobpries, an infielder/outfielder from Wharton, Texas; Amanda Scarborough, a pitcher/first baseman from Houston, Texas; Megan Gibson, a pitcher/third baseman from Spring, Texas; Jamie Hinshaw, an infielder from Missouri City, Texas; and added walk-on Beverly Rowan, a transfer catcher from UT-Arlington.
A&M opens the 2005 regular season on Friday, Feb. 4 against North Texas at 3 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex.
